The literature on international relations and conflict have identified an extensive list as to possible correlates of war. One area that has been understudied relates to the effect societal values have on conflict onset and resolution.

I hypothesized that societal traits and values would have various effects upon war initiation and was able to support some of my hypotheses. This study combined several social variables that proxy for societal traits — such as Individuality, Nationalism, Religiosity, and Xenophobia — with the Correlates of War COW Militarized Interstate Dispute MIDs data to investigate the impact these variables have on conflict onset.

In addition, several variables are included to control for the democratic peace, the capitalist peace, and military strength. Several logistic regression models were estimated using a dyadic data set and revealed mixed results. Religiosity was shown not to be a factor in war initiation but showed significance in other conflict levels.

Nationalism showed to be insignificant in war onset but highly significant for aggressive actions, perhaps showing that the rational actors make the final decision but are allowed more freedom by nationalistic tendencies. Xenophobia demonstrated that less culturally diverse populations had a higher likelihood of war likelihood. Individualistic societies appear to be less likely to go to war.

Overall, this shows that social factors do have an impact upon conflict resolution and occasionally war initiation. Mehmet Yaya. Soham Chakraborty. This work proposes a static state estimation method and network observability analysis using artificial neural networks trained using Bayesian Regularization. This method is aimed at reducing computational complexities as in case of conventional method. The proposed method is to be carried out and compared with the conventional weighted least square state estimation algorithm on a system.

In machine learning and cognitive science, artificial neural networks ANNs are a family of models inspired by biological neural networks the central nervous systems of animals, in particular the brain which are used to estimate or approximate functions that can depend on a large number of inputs and are generally unknown. Artificial neural networks are generally presented as systems of interconnected "neurons" which exchange messages between each other. The connections have numeric weights that can be tuned based on experience, making neural nets adaptive to inputs and capable of learning.

By using ANN based State estimator, it will be a direct procedure unlike WLS method which is a iterative procedure comprising of complex calculations. Here the input and output are mapped in an ANN, so we get direct estimates of state variables given the measurements as input. Hence there is no need to store the huge complex YBUS admittance matrix and perform complex calculations. ANN is implemented to get better and faster results from the state estimator used in load dispatch centres and also smart grids.

Observability Analysis of power system is done prior to running state estimator. If a system is found to be unobservable, then additional meters may have to be placed at particular locations to make the system observable. Network observability analysis identifies the observable islands, unobservable branches and the locations for placement of meters to make the system observable.
